Beginning in his late teens, Scott has been blessed with numerous spiritual experiences that have formed the foundation for his studies and writings. His master's thesis and doctoral dissertation focused on the phenomenon of "lucid dreaming," or the experience of becoming aware that one is dreaming during the dream. In 1976, he wrote Lucid Dreaming -- Dawning of the Clear Light, which was based largely on his own experiences. It has been extensively cited and hailed as an early classic in this new field of dream theory.
Scott has maintained a solo private practice in professional counseling since 1982. He specializes in transpersonal approaches to therapy, which include an innovative approach to dream work based on his lucid dream research.
He is a Licensed Professional Counselor (Texas) and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (Virginia). He has also authored several articles and home-study courses in the field of spirituality, dream theory, and dream analysis.

Scott worked for the Association for Research and Enlightenment for several years in the mid- to late-70s, serving in the capacity of counselor, lecturer, and editor. There he benefitted from the mentorship and friendship of the late Hugh Lynn Cayce, who was well known for his spiritual depth and charismatic personality. Scott owes much of his own spiritual awakening to Hugh Lynn's personal attention and mentoring during the early years of Scott's spiritual journey.
Scott is a charter faculty member at Atlantic University in Virginia Beach. There he has designed and taught courses on "The Origins and Destiny of Consciousness" and "The Yoga of Dreaming: Advanced Dream Work Methods." He is currently involved in the new Spiritual Guidance Mentoring Certificate program with AU, and serves as the course mentor for the course he has developed, titled "Principles and Practices of Spiritual Mentorship." He is also developing online continuing education courses for Atlantic University on dream analysis and ethical issues in transpersonal therapy.
He has lectured and taught courses across the U.S. on such topics as meditation, mystical experiences, and dream work methods. He is a student of Jungian psychology, Siddha Yoga, and mystical Christianity. For several years, he made a study of the "Christ encounter," which is the visionary or dream experience of meeting Christ face-to-face. A book on this research titled, I Am With You Always: True Stories of Encounters With Jesus, was published by Bantam in 1995. Similarly, he subsequently wrote a book about dreams and visions of Mary, titled Blessed Among Women: Encounters with Mary and Her Message, which was released by Crown Publishers early in 1997. He has authored two new books based on his research on Christ and Marian experiences for  titled, Sacred Encounters with the Living Christ and Sacred Encounters with the Holy Mother, both available from Ave Maria Press. His latest work is Healing the Fisher King: A Fly Fisher's Quest, which chronicles the male midlife journey.
